The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has secured a five-year jail term against one Alhaji Baba Ali, for sexually exploiting a 9-year-old girl in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The agency disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, November 29, 2022. NAPTIP said that the case was prosecuted by one of its lawyers, Mr. Mohammed Diri.
The statement said that the case was reported at the NAPTIP Zonal Office in Maiduguri on May 5, 2020, by Ms. Fatima Usman.
According to the statement, 26-year-old Ali was arraigned and convicted on Monday, November 28, by Justice Jude Dakat of the Federal High Court, Maiduguri.
The convict, a 26-year-old male from Anguwan Doki, Maiduguri, was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay a fine of N500,000 for sexually exploiting a 9-year-old female from the same address.
According to a statement from the Nigerian Police Force, the convict will serve his sentence in a correctional facility and will be required to register as a sex offender upon his release.
This sentence serves as a strong reminder that sexual abuse of children will not be tolerated in our society.
We must do everything we can to protect our children and ensure that those who exploit them are brought to justice.
